A building envelope is the physical outer-shell of a building that separates the exterior part of the building from its interior. This envelope encompasses various exterior elements such as the roofing system, exterior walls, doors, windows, and the foundation of the building.

The building envelope is the most important element of a building’s efficiency, sustainability, architectural and structural stability. It serves as the skin of the building providing a stable interior environment and climate control for the building.

An effective envelope system should have a well-designed foundation and structure with solid walls, doors, windows, a roofing system, air and thermal barriers, and appropriate drainage planes to allow for water to exit away from the building. Failure to maintain and correct envelope system defects could result in significant structural damage which poses serious safety hazards for building occupants.
